In this recipe, tempeh is marinated in a bit of water, garlic and salt. It's then fried until golden and served hot.

ingredients

  • 2 cloves crushed garlic
  • 225ml (8 fl oz) water
  • salt to taste
  • 225g (8 oz) tempeh
  • vegetable oil for frying

preparation method

  1.   Place the garlic in a small mixing bowl. Pour water and salt into the mixing bowl, mix well.
  2.   Slice the tempeh 2cm (3/4 in) thick and score both sides of the tempeh. Marinate the tempeh in the garlic, water and salt mixture for 20 minutes.
  3.   Pan fry the tempeh in a deep frying pan with oil until golden brown on both sides.

Note:

Tempeh, popular in Indonesia, is made from soybeans, much like tofu. It's taste and nutritional profile is quite different, however. It has a stronger flavour and more fibre and nutrients than tofu. It should be readily available in health food shops.

This was the first time I had tried/cooked tempeh, and this was a very pleasant surprise. This recipe is simple and delicious. I cut the tempeh into squares and fried them on all sides. We dipped them in soy sauce, ketchup and hp. Great recipe, thanks!

it was good, but a tiny bit bland. really easy to alter though...add whatever spices you like and it would probably work out well.
